To your question: Torque is actually the main factor. As far as horsepower goes, with some new springs/breaks etc you can throw 400+ horses at it and you should be fine.

Did you replace the mufflers? Some brands can collapse, depending on what’s inside of them. Try listening to one and then the other and see if they sound the same.
